Gen 6 block is a good foundation. All accessaries from gen 4 will fit it, other than no mecahnical fuel pump. As mentioned gen 5 and 6 are internally balanced and 4 is externally balanced. Make sure you get balancer and flywheel with it. A quick way to tell the difference from 5 and 6 is the timing cover. Gen 6 uses a 6 bolt aluminum cover.
