De eerste kiem ligt in 1636 toen de Universiteit werd opgericht en er automatisch een docentencorps en een studentencorps ontstonden. Vaak wordt als oprichtingsjaar 1816 aangehouden, maar dat is in feite slechts het oprichtingsjaar van de sociëteit Placet.
